A tour bus in New York crashed on Interstate 90 between Rochester and Buffalo, closing parts of the highway. Injuries and multiple deaths have been reported.

In a Facebook post, New York State Police said all lanes on Interstate 90 near Pembroke, New York, were closed, telling travelers to expect significant delays. According to a report from Spectrum News 1, police said 52 people were on the bus at the time of the crash.

State police on the scene updated the media Friday afternoon to confirm multiple deaths as a result of a rollover involving a child, and several people were locked in. Dozens of people were taken to local hospitals for treatment, according to Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, part of the USA Today Network.

The tour bus chartered from New York City had returned to the city from Niagara Falls when the bus lost control, but after crossing the south shoulder beyond the median value, the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reported.

“The most traumatic patient we had”: hospital chief says

Dozens of people injured in the collision were transported by helicopters or ground transport to local hospitals for treatment, Rochester Democrats reported.

“I’ve been here for 25 years… This is probably the most traumatic patient we’ve had since the incident in one of my career here in Buffalo,” said Dr. Samuel Cloud, Chief Medical Officer at Erie County Medical Center (ECMC).

ECMC has received 24 patients. The two are now in the trauma ICU and the other two are in the operating room, officials said. The remaining 20 people are actively receiving treatment in the emergency department. Several ECMC doctors also went to the scene to assist in treating patients.

Six people injured in the bus crash on Friday are undergoing treatment at the University of Rochester Medical Center, URMC said in a statement. Two patients are being treated for serious injuries, and four are medically stable, including children.

Officials say Mercy Flight, an organization that provides emergency medical transport, responded to the scene of a bus crash that included eight helicopters and 17 ground-sector EMS units, and transported 19 patients.
