A US woman was sentenced to 30 years in a British prison after attempting to kill a man in Birmingham, England.
Amy Betro, 45, from Wisconsin, flew to the UK in August 2019 and spent more than two weeks before attempting to shoot a man outside her home, West Midlands police said in a statement Thursday.
Betro is recruited by father and sons Mohammed Aslam and Mohammed Nazir to kill the man. He is the son of a man the pair gets caught up in a feud. Aslam and Nazir are jailed for their roles in the plot.
The intended victim survived an attempted short-range assassination due to a choked-up of Vetro’s gun. She later returned, fired a shot at his house before returning to the US.
The shooting caught up with major international law enforcement operations, allowing Betro to avoid it for five years before being tracked down in Armenia last summer.
In January she was returned to the UK, where she was charged with murder and conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
Police say Betro was also charged with a crime related to importing ammunition into the UK after sending illegal goods from the US to another Nazir rival.
Police say Betro and Nazir have now got to know each other online.
CCTV footage shows Betro purchased a Burner phone, which was used to plot the attack.
She also sent a threatening message to the father of the victim, whose intended shooting was.
“Stop playing Hide n Seek. You’re lucky that it’s stuffed. Who is it? Is it your family or choose you,” police said.
In another statement, the Crown Prosecutor’s Office (CPS) revealed that Betro “wrapped in a nikab to hide her identity when he tried to shoot the victim.”
The CPS also said Nazir is a “long-distance enthusiast” for Betro.
Betro was convicted earlier this month after a two-week trial and was sentenced to 30 years in Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday.
Detective Director Alastair Orenkas, West Midlands Police’s Major Crime Division, said solving the case “involves a huge amount of work.”
“We are fortunate that her attempt to kill her target has failed due to her gun clog,” Orenkas said in the statement.
“While she was overtaking herself as a tourist, while she was here, posting photos and videos of landmarks such as the London Eye, her real purpose was to commit murder,” he added.
Hannah Sidaway, a specialist prosecutor at CPS, said Betro “has no mercy in her bid to escape justice,” but investigators chased her “good luck.”
“The prosecution lawsuit included CCTV footage from the crime scene, digital forensics, mobile phone data, and evidence that was matched from the cooperation and cooperation of multiple countries and criminal justice agencies. West Midlands Police, Derbyshire Constabrary and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were all directed at one king.
“Only Betro knows that she was really motivated and that it meant that she would travel hundreds of miles from Wisconsin to Birmingham and carry out an assault on a man she didn’t know,” she added.
