Tesla officially unveiled the new Model Y in three rows of seats, but “it’s coming soon.”
On Chinese social media site Weibo, the electric car giant teased up the upcoming model YL. This is a three-row version of the brand’s popular SUV. The Model YL comes with a longer wheelbase and three rows of seats to meet the growing market demand for three rows of SUVs.
In addition to additional seating and cargo space, the newly announced Model YL appears to have a new design and functionality for Tesla vehicles.
What’s new in Model YL?
The teaser video shows some changes inside the vehicle, beyond the larger wheelbase and more rooms in the rear seats. This depicts excess ventilation flowing in the back row and retractable arms protruding from the base of the seat.
On the outside, the teaser video shows the Model YL has a new badge on the back of the vehicle, spoilers on the back, and a redesigned wheel.
Will Model YL be available in the US?
In July, Tesla registered plans to bring Model YL to the Chinese market. These filings show that the vehicle has a 120-inch wheelbase and three rows of seats. After submitting the announcement, Tesla said on her Weibo account, “Model YL, see you in the fall.”
Tesla has yet to announce plans to bring the longer Model Y to the American market.
Model YL is competing for Tesla to open its foothold in the Chinese automotive market, opposed to EV giants like Xiaomi and BYD.
The Model YL appears to be on sale in the third or fourth quarter of China, but the longer and more spacious Model Y could work better in the US market. According to an online constituent at Tesla, the Model YL starts at 339,000 Chinese Yuan (approximately $47,000). In May 2025, Tesla released a cheaper, updated version of the Model Y (the same size as previous model years, but with some affordable trim levels.
The popular and profitable vehicle in the US market will work well for automakers like Tesla, who have struggled to sell in the US in 2025, due to their close ties with CEO Elon Musk and President Donald Trump.
