good morning!🙋🏼♀️I’m Nicole Forelt. Welcome to the daily briefing, “Shiny Bug Edition.”
Take a quick look at Tuesday’s news:
Trump urged Putin to arrange a meeting with Zelenskyy
President Donald Trump called Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday to urge him to meet with Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky in his latest effort to end hostility between the two fighting countries.
From European leaders to Zelensky to Trump: To Putin: The call concluded the day filled with White House meetings between Ukraine, British, French, German, Italian, Finland, NATO and the leaders of the European Union.
- Trump called the meeting “very good.” The president said that security assurances in Ukraine by various European countries were discussed “in coordination with the United States of America.”
- However, the president has not specified what such adjustments will involve. Despite the remarkable display of European unification in one room, it was not immediately clear whether great advances had been made.
- It’s not a bitter repetition. The Trump Zelensky gathering was a warm and gentle exchange, as Zelensky wore a black suit instead of his usual military uniform.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials say Russia attacked the central city of Clemencic with a drone overnight.
What does intense Hurricane Erin mean for the rest of the season?
Hurricane Erin temporarily achieved Category 5 status over the weekend as it intensified in the Atlantic. Category 5 hurricanes are the rarest storms, reaching strong winds of over 157 mph, only a small portion of all tropical cyclones. The latest Colorado State University forecast, released in early August, calls for a total of eight hurricanes in 2025, with three of which predicted to be major. Here’s how ocean temperature contributes to storm strength:

Texas Democrats are returning to Japan
Democrats in the Texas House returned to Austin Monday after leaving the state in 2026 in protest of Republican plans to redraw Congressional maps to win seats. However, lawmakers have set conditions for returning to work. Republicans have to postpone their first special session at the Capitol, and California has to go ahead with a retaliation plan that redraws its own map in favour of Democrats.
Is America doing it with clean energy?
New wind and solar installations, as well as the cheap, clean energy they provide to America, may not survive the Trump administration. Based on public concern and his own dislike, the dislike for “ugh,” “nasty” wind turbines and “silly” solar farms has issued a blizzard of orders and executive orders that would limit new solar and wind projects in the county. In at least one case, the administration has sought permissions already issued. Instead, the administration has promoted energy production from oil, natural gas and coal, making the Biden administration even more expensive through regulations Trump is currently dismantling. Meanwhile, electricity demand is rising at an all-time high.
