Federal agents appear in the announcement of Newsom’s rezoning
Federal agents appeared outside California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Los Angeles press conference, where they called for a special election for the district.
Democratic activists and workers groups held hundreds of rallies and other events across the United States on Saturday, August 16th, protesting the Trump administration’s push for Texas to redraw Congressional maps in support of Republicans.
A former House member of Congressman Beto O’Rourke was among those speaking in Texas on Saturday, when dozens of democratic state lawmakers fled to deny Republicans.
“They’re afraid, so they do this,” O’Rourke told the audience on Saturday. “They are afraid of this power they are seeing here today.”
For all, Drucilla Tigner, executive director of the Democracy Union of Democracy, told Reuters’ Democracy and Labor Group that he has hosted more than 300 events attended by tens of thousands of states and Washington, D.C.
Many of the more than 50 Texan Democrats who fled the state are staying in Illinois, the location of the protest on Saturday. Illinois Texas legislators are out of reach of civil arrest warrants that could act within Texas.
Texas Democrats prevented the map from coming to vote in a special session that ended Friday when Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Abbott immediately called for a second special session.
Abbott said other legislative work remains rescinded because of the deadly July flood plan to increase fireflood safety, laws to increase flash flood safety, and Democrats do not exist.
California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom announced plans for rezoning in his state on Thursday, August 14th.
Texas House Democrats said in a written statement Thursday that they will only return to Texas if the state’s special law ends and the California rezoning map is introduced.
