California Gov. Gavin Newsom mocked President Donald Trump in all cap tweets amid a fierce constituency effort in Texas.
Texas Senate Democrats overcome rezoning bill
Texas Senate Democrats have overcome the controversial district measures, but Republicans still pass 19-2.
WASHINGTON – California Democratic government Gavin Newsom mocked President Donald Trump with all cap tweets amid a fierce constituency effort in Texas that could give him up to five more Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives next year.
Mimicking Trump’s all-cap social media style, Newsom has proposed that the president be trolled as “Donald ‘octopus’ Trump” and that California will quickly move forward with its own district to offset Republican efforts in Texas.
The post comes when Newsom urged Trump in an August 11 letter to stop his rezoning efforts, claiming that he was “on fire and playing,” and that he “has risked the destabilization of our democracy.” Newsom added that if Trump doesn’t stop, he will redraw a map of California’s Congress to counter Texas efforts.
“Donald ‘Octopus’ Trump has missed the deadline, as many people call him a ‘deadline’!!! Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
“Taco,” an acronym “Trump Always Drops Chickens,” is a reference to Trump’s ever-changing tariff deadlines. Newsom’s post has received over 3.2 million views.
Democrat governor Kathy Hochul of New York and JB Pretzker of Illinois previously threatened to launch their own district change efforts that could bring about an increase in Democrats.
After the new US Census Bureau figures are released, rezoning is required every ten years. But Trump encouraged Texas Republicans to jump the process in the mid-10 years.
According to the Texas Stribune, on August 12, the Texas Senate approved the new boundary for Congress with a 19-2 vote.
Texas’ rezoning efforts are stagnating at the state Capitol, where most Democrats flee the state and deny the quorum needed to pass the measure to a majority Republican.
Trump said on August 5 that Republicans “qualify for five more seats” in Texas as they won the 2024 election. Republicans now hold their US home on the slender rim of a razor.
Newsom said he’s focused on special elections in November, so voters could consider voting measures that would allow California’s new house map ahead of mid-2026.
