Chinese authorities may even use nets, spray insecticides, deploy drones to combat the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus, which has infected thousands of people.
Authorities had reported more than 7,000 virus cases as of Wednesday. It is mainly located in the Chinese manufacturing hub in the southern part of Foshan, about 170 kilometers (105 miles) from Hong Kong. Authorities say the number of new cases is slowly falling.
According to Cesar Lopez Camacho of Oxford University, it appears to be the largest documented outbreak in China in China. This virus can be transmitted by infected mosquitoes and can cause fever and joint pain.
“What’s noteworthy about this event is that Chikunguña has never been established in mainland China before,” Lopez Camacho said in a statement. “This suggests that most populations do not have existing immunity, making it easier for the virus to spread quickly.”
Television in China’s state shows people spraying insecticides in urban streets, residential areas, construction sites and other areas where people may come into contact with mosquitoes. Workers sprayed several places before entering the office building.
Extremely heavy rain and high temperatures have exacerbated the crisis in China, with authorities using drones to find standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs.
Authorities are also threatening to punish people who don’t empty water from outdoor containers. Residents can be fined up to 10,000 yuan ($1,400) and can cut off electricity.
Due to the virus, the US has issued travel advisories suggesting that Americans will take special precautions when visiting China’s Guangdong province, where Foshan is located, and some island nations in the Indian Ocean.
Since the outbreak of SARS in 2003, China has used strict measures to combat the spreading of the virus, including hard-pressed tactics during the Covid-19 pandemic. This time, the patient was forced to stay at Fochamp’s hospital for at least a week, and authorities temporarily enforced the two-week home district.
Reports have also emerged about attempts to stop the spread of Chikungunia, along with fish that eat mosquito larvae and larger mosquitoes that eat insects carrying the virus.
Officials held and adopted a conference at the national level, signs of China’s determination to eliminate the pandemic and avoid public and international criticism.
