WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is set to host Apple CEO Tim Cook at the White House on August 6th as Tech Giant, the company’s latest move to boost domestic production to protect popular iPhones from Trump’s sudden tariffs, announces a new $100 billion US investment.
Trump is expected to welcome the announcement confirmed by White House officials and first reported by Bloomberg. This brings Apple’s planned investment to $600 billion over the next four years.
Apple’s announcement includes a new “American manufacturing program” that seeks to provide Apple’s supply chain and sophisticated manufacturing to the United States, White House officials said in a preview of the president’s remarks.
“Today’s announcement with Apple is another manufacturing victory and will help us reswim the production of key components to protect America’s economic and national security,” Taylor Rogers, assistant secretary for White House spokesperson, said in a statement.
An Apple representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In May, Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on mobile phones manufactured by Apple and other companies in other countries. In a social media post on May 23, Trump produced more than half of India’s mobile phones, avoiding Chinese tariffs and picked out comments made during the call to revenue.
As part of a new wave of mutual tariffs set to take effect on August 7th, Trump signed an executive order last week to impose a 25% tariff on imports from India.
The White House has aggressively touted manufacturing investments from private companies as evidence that Trump’s tariff strategy is working.
Apple said in February that it would spend $500 billion on US investment over the next four years, including a huge factory for Texas artificial intelligence servers, adding around 20,000 R&D jobs nationwide. However, the Washington Post reported that a large portion of the $500 billion covers the usual costs of running its business.
