WASHINGTON – In an interview with Fox News broadcast on August 3, President Donald Trump accused Ukraine of effectively funding Russian wars from Moscow in Ukraine after the US leaders put pressure on New Delhi to stop buying Russian oil, then bought oil from Moscow.

“What he (Trump) said very clearly is that India will not be able to continue funding this war by purchasing oil from Russia,” said Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff at the White House and one of Trump’s most influential aides.

Miller’s criticism was one of the most powerful by the Trump administration about one of the major US partners in the Indo-Pacific.

“You’ll be shocked to learn that India is basically linked to China when purchasing Russian oil, which is an incredible fact,” Miller told Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.

The Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. An Indian government source told Reuters on August 2 that New Delhi will continue to buy oil from Moscow despite the US threat.

The 25% tariff on Indian products came into effect on August 1st, as a result of the purchase of military equipment and energy from Russia. Trump also threatened 100% tariffs on US imports from countries purchasing Russian oil unless Moscow reaches a massive peace deal with Ukraine.

Miller eased criticism by paying attention to Trump’s relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
