The Swedish man committed serious war crimes and terrorist crimes on Thursday in his role in killing a Jordanian Air Force pilot burned in Syria a decade ago, Stockholm District Court said in its verdict.

The Swedish, identified as Osama Klayem in court documents, was sentenced to life in prison for participating in the execution of Muas al-Kasasbe, who was captured in Syria in December 2014 and then burned alive in a cage.

Krayem, 32, was previously convicted of involvement in the attacks in Paris in 2015 and Brussels in 2016, and was transferred from France to Sweden on trial in Stockholm.

Krayem denied acting intentionally. His Swedish lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The ISIS extremist group, once imposing terrifying rule on millions of people in Syria and Iraq, captured a Jordanian pilot and later released a video showing his execution.

This court sketch from November 2021 shows Osama Krame, one of the accused, who is on trial in Paris.

Evidence showed that the fire that killed Al Kasasbe was illuminated by another man, but Klayem was also involved in the murder, the court said.

“The district court has found that the defendant, through his actions, should actively contribute to the pilot’s death and be considered an assailant,” Judge Anna Liljenberg Garesjo said in a court statement.

ISIS ruled Swas in Iraq and Syria between 2014 and 2017.

Under Swedish law, courts can test individuals for violations of international law made overseas.
