What to do if Social Security benefits are overpaid
Overpaid beneficiaries have 90 days to submit exemptions or repayment plans or cut benefits.
Social Security payments for August will follow the normal schedule. However, those who were previously overpaid by the Social Security Administration may receive less benefit checks.
That’s because agents were expected to withhold 50% of the profits of people who had been overpaid but had not yet begun repayments.
SSA has not released a large number of recipients who have been overpaid. However, between 2020 and 2023, a February 2025 report by the SSA Inspector’s Office found that the agency was overpaid for overpayment of Social Security benefits. Such information may include changes in medical condition, such as additional salary or retirement income, or the termination of disability conditions.
Social Security benefits are paid primarily to older or retired recipients, but are usually paid on Wednesdays. According to the Social Security Agency calendar, if your date of birth is between the first and tenth days of the month, payments will be issued on the first Wednesday of the month (this month, August 13th).
According to the SSA calendar, subsequent payments will be released every week. Social Security recipients who have begun receiving benefits by May 1997 will be paid on August 1st.

Regular Social Security retirement benefits for July will be sent on the regular SSA schedule.
- Wednesday, August 13th: Your date of birth is between the first and ten days of the month.
- Wednesday, August 20th: Your date of birth is from the 11th to the 20th of the month.
- Wednesday, August 27th: Your date of birth is from the 21st to the 31st of the month.

What is SSI?
Supplementary Security Income (SSI) is a benefits program for those with limited income or resources, those over the age of 65, or those with blind or qualified disabilities. According to the SSA website, eligible children with disabilities are also eligible. Adults who qualify for SSI typically do not have wages above $2,019 per month.
