Training camp is not off to a good start for the New York Jets’ new QB1.
According to multiple reports, Jets quarterback Justin Fields had to return to the locker room on Thursday, the second day of Jets training camp practice.
The first report shows that Field stepped out of the field into a medical tent with his trainer before Kurt took him to the locker room.
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn told media members after practice that it was a toe injury to the field. He added that he assumes someone has stepped into Fields’ toes. The severity of the injury has not been determined yet.
Fields is one of the Jets’ biggest free-agent signatures in the offseason, representing a new face under the center of the team’s new structure after Gang Green released veteran Aaron Rodgers.
Glenn told reporters after practice Thursday that Hata suffered a toe injury. The Jets head coach believes someone stepped into the quarterback’s foot while playing.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that he was a non-big toe dislocated to the right foot of the field.
Tom Pelissero of the NFL network writes that the x-rays are negative, but that field still undergoes MRI to confirm that there are no other structural damage.
The severity of Fields’ injury is still unknown for now, so there is no current timeline as to how long the Jets quarterback has been out.
According to an article on Healthline.com, recovery from a toe injury can take several days to eight weeks. The Jets continue to evaluate Fields’ injuries and hope they are ready to start the regular season in early September.
Fields was expected to become the Jets quarterback before his injury. Depending on the severity of Fields’ injury, the Jets may have to compete for a starting job between the other three quarterbacks on the roster.
Here are the current contracts for New York:
Fields signed with the Jets in free agency after spending a year with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He relegated him to a backup role after Russell Wilson returned from injury after Pittsburgh’s six starts last year.
Taylor signed a two-year contract with New York before the 2024 season. He played two games for them last year (week 1 and week 17) and both were saving Rogers in garbage time. The Jets are the seventh team of the 35-year-old Journeyman.
Martinez joined the Jets last year after winning the UFL League MVP and UFL Championship MVP during the spring 2024 football season. He spent a fall on the Jets practice team and re-signed Gang Green in January on a reserve/future contract.
Cook signed with New York as an undrafted free agent about two weeks after the end of the 2025 NFL Draft. Missouri products went 26-13 as a starter during their college career, including the 11-2 2023 season, which culminated in the classic Cotton Bowl victory in Ohio.
- length: 2 years
- value: $40 million ($20 million AAV)
The Jets are paying the field to start quarterback money for each of the next two seasons. This was the first contract field to be signed as a free agent after his rookie contract expired after the 2024 season.
The average annual value of the deal is No. 20th for NFL quarterbacks this year, ahead of Rodgers with the Steelers following Baker Mayfield’s deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Fields is set to make nearly $6 million more than Rogers makes at Steel City this year.
