Openai is waving with Oracle in a massive deal to advance the former giant Stargate AI Data Center initiative.
It’s one thing to talk about the AI revolution in abstract terms, but it’s completely different to grasping the pure physical scale of what’s being built to make it happen. The future foundations of our AI are placed on concrete, steel and miles of fiber optic cables, and their foundations are hugely large.
Together, Openai and Oracle will build a new data center in the US, packed with enough hardware to consume 4.5 gigawatts of power. It’s hard to exaggerate an incredible amount of energy. It is a force that can illuminate major cities. And it’s all dedicated to one thing: empowering the next generation of AI.
This is more than just a random extension. This is a huge part of Openai’s Grand Star Gate plan. The goal is simple. It’s about building enough computing power to bring advanced AI to everyone.
Adding this new project to work already in progress in Abilene, Texas, Openai is currently developing data center capacity of over 5 gigawatts. This is enough space to run over 2 million people on the most powerful computer chips available.
The move shows they are seriously dying about the pledge made at the White House earlier this year. In fact, they are hoping to blow past that initial goal, with the momentum they have gained from partners like Oracle and Japan’s SoftBank.
But this story isn’t just about silicon chips and business transactions. It’s about people. Openai believes that the creation and operation of these new Stargate AI data centers will create more than 100,000 jobs.
That job creation offers real opportunities for families across the country, from concrete-poured construction crews to professional electricians wiring server racks, to full-time technicians running these digital brains day and night.
At Abilene, the first phase of Openai’s development at the Stargate data center is already comparable to the activity. The first trucks of Nvidia’s brand new GB200 chips have arrived, and Openai researchers have already used them to see what the next AI model can do.
Of course, this huge project is by no means a two-player game. While Oracle helps build the physical capabilities of the Stargate initiative, Openai is working closely with SoftBank to completely rethink how to design AI data centers from the ground up. Also, don’t forget to remain Microsoft, which remains a key cloud partner. We provide digital plumbing that connects everything.
Behind the curtains is the very realistic and very human industry efforts that are currently underway on a scale that we have never seen before. It is a powerful reminder that our digital world is built with grit, ambition and almost incredible amounts of electricity.
