Scotty Schaeffler made the most of the second round and led the third day of the 153rd Open Championship.
The world’s No. 1 and tournament favourite was in the second round at Royal Port Rush Golf Club in Northern Ireland, shooting a 7-under par 64 when zoomed to the top of the leaderboard. Schaeffler will be sitting on -10 entering the third round on Saturday, July 19th. One stroke is better than Matt Fitzpatrick.
Schaeffler shot a 3-under 68 on the first day, shooting one shot from the lead in the first round. He grabbed Fitzpatrick and lead share in the second round after a 17-foot birdie putt in the 16-foot hole.
Two different groups are bundled behind them. Brian Herman and Haotong Lee are tied up at 8 under, with five other people sitting in -5 in the third round. Hometown’s favorite, Rory McIlroy, opens day 3 tied up on the 12th day at -3.
USA Today Sports will host full round 3 coverage from Royal Portrush, so be sure to check out live updates.
Scotty Schaeffler took the lead again on the 7th on the Eagle putt, while Fitzpatrick continued walking into the same hole with birdie putts. Schaeffler is currently 12 under and has a pair of Perfleurs to close his first nine holes. Rory McIlroy is back five times after another long putt for the Eagle in par 5 12th place for 532 yards.

McIlroy’s tee shot in No. 1 escaped off the fairway, but he made up for it with the second shot, earning a reasonable shot on birdie. His 36-foot birdie putt is true, and he repeated feats in the second hole, winning the Masters Champion 5-under for the tournament.
Canada’s Corey Connors had their third round to sneak up towards the top of the leaderboard to get a chance with a top 10 finish. The Connors jumped to 41 locations since the start of the third round, with second round leader Scotty Schaeffler having 4 unders and six shots from the set set.
John Parry, who had a hole-in-one at 192 yards No. 13, also moved to the tie in 10th place in the round 5-under. Bryson DeDanbaugh finishes his third round and will begin playing on Sunday at 2 under after the age of 68 on Saturday.

After the rain fell overnight, the weather channel is seeking cloudy skies at the Royal Portrush for most of Saturday’s third round. Early tee time players start under cool conditions with temperatures just above 60 degrees before turning to highs in the 60s. There are a few chances that the shower might return late in the morning, but you need to clear it relatively quickly.
The 153rd edition of the Open Championship takes place at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. This is the third mark that Royal Portrush held tournaments following 1951 and 2019.
