Three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies were killed Friday in an explosion at a training facility, authorities said.

The explosion was reported at the Sheriff’s Viscale Training Center location around 7:30am on July 18th. The Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed that three deputies were killed in the explosion and members of the department’s arson team were helping with the investigation.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the incident “terrifying” and said that a surviving bomb squad from the Los Angeles Police Department was on the scene. “All Angeleno’s thoughts lie in everything that is affected by this explosion,” Bass said.

Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote to X that federal agents, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, including cigarettes, firearms and explosives, are helping to respond. She added that she has been in touch with Sheriff Robert Luna and Bill Essay’s lawyers about the explosion.

“I told @usattyessayli about what appears to be a horrifying incident in which at least three people were killed at a law enforcement training facility in Los Angeles,” she said in X.

“A terrible tragedy”

Members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the county board of trustees, issued a statement after the blast, expressing their sadness when they lost three representatives.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred this morning at Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Viscales Training Academy,” said director Hilda Solis. “My heart is directed at the three individual family, friends and colleagues who lost their lives in what appears to be a devastating explosion.”

County Supervisor Katherine Berger said he was “grief to hear of the horrific tragedy that unfolded today at the LA County Sheriff’s facility.”

“I’m keeping track of the situation closely as I learn more about what happened and the state of those affected,” she added in a statement. “My heart is heavy and my thoughts are the brave men and women of the sheriff’s department during this difficult time. We will stand with them and their families.
