Who is Omar Fathee? Minneapolis mayoral candidate slams racist attacks

Date:

Minneapolis mayoral candidate and Minnesota Sen. Omar Fathee are calling for a slate of right-wing complaints about his legal status and Muslim identity.

Washington, the son of immigrant parents from Somali, runs in the 2025 mayoral election. Critics have denounced his progressive causes, such as a rent freeze and an increase in the minimum wage, but several comments escalated to online attacks on his appearance, religion and citizenship.

Fateh opposed the hateful comments in replying to the anti-Islamic Post on the night of X Monday, July 14th, by conservative political activists and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

Fate I answered In Kirk’s post, “Minneapolis is a beautifully diverse city that sticks to our progressive values. The hatred we saw today, and most days — we’re probably never before.”

Who is Omar Fathee?

Omar Fatte, 35, is a Democrat serving his second term as a state senator in Minnesota’s 62nd District, while running to become Minneapolis’ next mayor.

Born in Washington, DC, Fate said he was the son of immigrant parents from Somali and would soon become a father.

He received his Masters in Government from George Mason University and previously worked as a community specialist in Minneapolis and a project coordinator for the state Department of Transport and Business Analyst at the University of Minnesota.

When he was elected to the state senator in 2020, Fatae became the first Muslim and first Somali-American to join the Minnesota Senate. He previously ran a failed campaign for a state Senate seat in 2018, losing the Democratic primary to former national representative Hodan Hassan.

What is his promise as mayor?

In his run to mayor, Fate is a democratic socialist and, among other policies, pledges to improve ride-share protections for Uber and Lyft drivers, combat police violence and increase the supply of affordable housing.

He has pledged to raise the city’s minimum wage from $15.97 to $20 by 2028. Minnesota’s minimum wage is currently $11.13.

He also vows to stand up to the current administration of President Donald Trump, including not allowing city police to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“Whether it’s an immigrant attack or not, our residents deserve a mayor to stand up to Donald Trump and say, “No, it’s not our community.” ”

Comments come after Zohran Mamdani’s backlash

Grassroots organization Take Action Minnesota has denounced Fate’s comments on citizenship and Muslim identity.

“Islamophobia has no place in politics or our community,” the group said. I wrote it in X post. “Senator Fatte is right – this hatred is not who we will ever be. We organize to elect leaders like Fate because we share a community vision built around care and love, not hatred.”

The online attack comes after 33-year-old New York State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani experienced similar hateful comments about his Muslim identity during the New York mayor’s campaign.

The democratic socialists have caught the attention of the public after wiping out the city’s democratic mayoral primary with a surprising upset against former government Andrew Cuomo. If he wins the general election in November, he will become the city’s first Muslim mayor and its first Asian American mayor.
