“Bridgerton” Netflix star Charitra Chandran stole Andrew Garfield’s spotlight at Wimbledon after a video of him sitting behind him went viral.
Garfield’s fan account has posted a clip of the actor enjoying the game at Wimbledon. The attention soon turned to Chandran in the background.
“Look at the brown queen behind him,” one X user wrote in the post with 17 million views. “Charithra Chandran is one of the most beautiful people in existence,” replied another user.
However, when the internet began picking up Chandran’s appearance, posting photos of her side by side with or without makeup, calling her a “mid,” and accusing her of doing plastic surgery with filler, it quickly turned sour.
“All she did was look beautiful at Wimbledon, and now Incels has decided that (she) should be her next target,” one X user posted with 5 million views. “What’s interesting is that she looks stunning even in the worst photos she can find her,” replied another user.
Chandran’s trolls show the double bindings that women face. If you become natural, you’re not doing enough. If you’re wearing makeup, you’re going too far. Either way, you can’t win.
Detaching women’s appearances presents “a sexist double standard judged by the appearance of women in ways that men do not.” It is also a way to “police” women, she adds, “perpetuating the ideal of narrow beauty that is unattainable for most people, especially women of color.”
There is no discussion about makeup and makeup
The “unrecognized makeup” trend has made the internet hot, with some people using makeup to complete the full facial change. The problematic joke of “swimming her on your first date” has been around for nearly a decade. They are tossed by men who claim that early looking at women without makeup is the only way to avoid dating “bamboo stuffed” as unattractive.
In 2021, actress Sidney Sweeney has often been praised for her looks, but screamed live on Instagram while robbing the trend for “ugh” on X (Then, Twitter). In October 2024, Sweeney was photographed with a brunette curly wig, baggy clothes and an obviously unmakeup set. She was then featured in X-thread in 11 million views entitled “Catfish of the Year,” comparing photos of the red carpet with candid shots of paparazzi.
Another user came to her defense: “‘Sidney Sweeney is a catfish’ Sir ‘If the blonde woman wakes up with jet’s black eyelashes and can’t recognize that she’s not awake with the sparkle of her face, then you might be too stupid to reach.”
Many women oppose criticism of makeup, claiming that makeup is an “art” rather than a “false form.”
“The beautiful women we were taught are naturally beautiful and beautiful without any visible effort on her side,” says Tanenbaum. “But we all know that it is impossible to comply with our ideals of social beauty without effort.”
And in digital landscapes where beauty filters and apps like FaceTune are very common, perceptions of “real” or “naturally beautiful” can be greatly distorted. Chandran was surprised at glam at Wimbledon, but many celebrities have already opposed the norm of beauty, in favour of accepting a natural look.
Pamela Anderson has created headlines to keep her away from wearing makeup over the past few years.
“I’m not trying to be the pretty girl in my room,” she said in an October 2023 interview with Vogue France. “I feel it’s just freedom. It’s a relief.”
When criticism goes too far
When misogyny and the internet tear apart a woman’s appearance, it not only leaves behind emotional consequences, but also opens the door for more serious consequences.
Some of the people who take part in dogpiling are bullies. But even among those who do not imply any further harm, it creates social acceptability to exacerbate women because of their appearance.
