An armed man was killed after exchanging fires with law enforcement officers at a Texas Border Patrol facility on Monday, July 7th, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed with USA Today.

“An individual fired at the entrance to the U.S. Border Patrol division in McAllen this morning,” Homeland Security spokesman Tricia McLaughlin said in an email.

The city in southern Texas is located in Hidalgo County along the Mexican border.

“Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooters,” McLaughlin said.

According to a spokesman, two officers and one police officer were injured in the incident.

The Rio Grande Valley Sector of the Border Patrol said the shooter was dead after an active shooter incident occurred at the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector Annex, according to the agency’s social media page.

All three injured officers were taken to the hospital.

The officer’s shooting was in stable condition Monday, according to a statement provided to USA Today by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The statement continued at about 5:53am local time, and the McAllen Police Station received a call about a shot he had heard from outside the McAllen USBP station near the airport. McAllen police notified the FBI San Antonio department and its local partners to respond to the incident.

“The armed suspect, an adult male, worked with law enforcement officers responding to the scene and officers returned the fire,” the FBI said in a statement. “There are no threats to public safety as we know right now, but due to the abundant attention the FBI is asking us to avoid this area if possible.”

The incident is under investigation by the FBI, officials said.

This is a developing story.
