On the evening of July 3rd, a rapidly moving but violent thunderstorm paved a path of confusion and destruction in the central jersey, causing at least one death, leaving thousands without power.

The storm struck during rush hour the evening before July 4th. A gust of wind was recorded at 62 mph, according to the National Weather Service. An inch of hail was reported near Bethlehem and Easton in Lehigh Valley.

Gov. Phil Murphy confirmed that the storm killed residents, and Acweather reported three deaths.

In a post on X, Murphy said: “I was described as a serious thunderstorm and strong winds that hit the central jersey tonight and died.

“If you’re in the area, stay inside and avoid fallen trees, power lines or combustion transformers. We’re in close contact with the local mayor and emergency response personnel to provide assistance.”

The emergency was declared at Plainfield. The city’s Independence Day parade, concerts and fireworks have been cancelled.
