As Americans live longer, these are my tips to make the most of it

When I left the doctor’s office, one of the nurses commented.th Birthday party. “At the age of 96, he found it exciting to read about the existence of the 8-milli tribe, from an estimated 101,000 in 2024 to about 422,000 in 2054, according to the US Census Bureau. ” Dr. Laura Caltensen, director of the Stanford Center’s Longevity Center, describes it as a “long, bright future.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Joseph Couglin, CEO of MIT’s Age Lab, wrote a book titled “The Longevity Economy: The Most Misunderstood Market in Unlocking Unlocking Onlocking the World.” Regardless of the label, this is definitely a period of time when there is an opportunity to create new products, housing alternatives, policies and services to meet the needs of changing demographics. Longevity sounds great in theory, but what does this “long bright future” actually mean to you and me? However, after that I was hospitalized and expected to die with Covid-19 and pneumonia. By 95, my energy levels had plummeted. Highly energy, engaged, optimistic, have I been the person I’ve been?

I wondered what I should do and what I should do if I couldn’t walk the way I did, give a confident speech, or consult with the organization like I used to. Despite the restrictions, I still want to make a difference in the world.

I’m not alone with these questions. Greg Kaplan, 72, has retired several times. His first career shortly after college was exploratory, resulting in the purchase of one store at the airport. That experience led him to buy the entire franchise. Twenty-five years later, he sold the franchise and retired.

Eventually he decided to return to being a hobby carpenter and began designing and building the kitchen. Again he was very successful and even met his current wife in one of his jobs. Another 15 years later he realized it was time to retire, but he continued to postpone it. He fears that it’s no longer a “problem.” His purpose fades away.

How to see the changes

The longer you live, the more you will face transitions. So, to continue living well, we need to focus on how many unexpected transitions can be managed in the future to remove the mystery from change. Looking at Kaplan’s life through a transition lens provides everyone with a framework for understanding and dealing with every transition, at any time in their life. The ability to handle them depends on: Where you are in the migration process. As you leave your job or relationship and begin to move on to something else, you experience what anthropologists label as a period of liminality (the vague time between major stages of life). Now, newly retired Kaplan knows he won’t have another career, but he knows he’s a bit at sea. Golf is important, but as he says, “Is that everything?”

How much a transition will change your life. The more the transition changes your life, the more stressful it becomes. Kaplan’s latest transition (retirement) changes the assumptions from work to retirement, relationships with colleagues and family, work to golf routines, and relevance to feeling his problems.

The strength of the response resources. We all approach the transition with potential resources – what I call the “4 S system”: your situation (Is your life general or stressful?), your self (Are you an optimist or a pessimist, are you resilient?), support (Is there any personal and institutional support you can count on?), and use your strategy?

Are you still important?

Donbunch, former food and beverage director at the Sarasota Bay Club, a retirement community of over 300 residents, retired a few years ago. A year after the trip, he and his wife settled down. He had no hobbies, sat around the house, watched TV and was totally bored. His old work was opened and he returned to work. Two years later, he decided it was time to retire. His answer to my question as to why this retirement is better than the last one was clear. “This time we have a new purpose. We are moving to a small Midwest town. We are renovating our homes. We are going to participate in community activities. We are making a difference in the lives of others and we are first mental health researchers with others.

Playing the bridge, writing grant proposals, doing crossword puzzles, finding ways to start a project are practically examples of complex activities. A study of 883 men and their wives in 1974 was engaged in work, and subsequent studies in 1994, pursuing leisure activities of 315 men and 320 women proved that they would “use or lose it.”

Also, use the ideas given to you. One retired pilot was loose ending. His ex-wife told him about an ad for someone to deliver flowers. He jumped at the opportunity to make people happy with each and every time he delivered a living flower.

Aging leads to new careers, relationships and opportunities Lifespan affects how we love, learn, work and play as we continue to age. Life turns out to be an endless series of transitions, including new careers, new relationships, new ways to enjoy leisure, new jobs and volunteer possibilities, and new opportunities to learn new skills.

However, it should be noted that longevity is filled with unexpected twists and turns. As we deal with the unknown, we are forced to improvise. I often recall my friend, Jeanne Hansel, who was forced to quit her job as a therapist as her health deteriorated. She decided to consciously use the rest of her time to chart new passes. And, although not so symbolic, her spiritual path appeared after reading No Accidents: Synchronism and the Story of Our Life Written by Robert Hopke. Her later years reflected what she thought was incompatible. Combined with physical decline and personal growth.

It can happen. One must be open to it.
