The horrifying moment on board a Disney Cruise Line ship becomes an incredible rescue after the child falls overboard and her father jumps after her.
The June 29 incident occurred when Disney’s dream came back to Fort Lauderdale from a four-night Bahamas sailing, including a stop at Disney’s Lookout Cay at the Lighthouse. As first reported on the street, the emergency code “Mr. Mob” (Man Over Board) rang across the ship’s intercom, indicating an emergency response.
“The crew on the Disney Dream quickly rescued two guests from the water,” a Disney Cruise Line spokesman told USA Today in a statement. “We commend the crew for their outstanding skills and quick action. This ensured that both guests could return safely to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and happiness of our guests, and this incident underscores the effectiveness of safety protocols.”
Regarding social media posts from cruisers, he explained the rapid response from the crew who set up Life’s guardians and deployed rescue boats within minutes. In a Facebook post, passenger Kevin Furuta said, “The girl who fell overboard from the fourth deck and her father came in… Thankfully, the DCL rescue team was there right away, and both were saved!”
Despite assuming the ship could have been docked, passengers confirmed that rescue was made while Disney’s dream was cruising between the Bahamas and Florida. Despite the ship’s plexiglass safety barriers, how the child fell overboard remains unknown.
Like many major cruise operators, Disney ships are also equipped with an overboard detection system designed to alert ship crews of such incidents in real time.
