Winners and losers of “Big Beautiful Bills”
These are the potential winners and losers of the tax bills that President Donald Trump called the “big beautiful bill.”
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has threatened to find a Republican candidate to challenge Sen. Tom Tillis after North Carolina lawmakers opposed his legislative package.
Tillis had expressed concern about the Senate version of the bill’s Medicaid cuts. He voted to begin debate on the law on June 28th.
In a social post, Trump said that “many of people” wanted to run against Tillis.
“I’m going to meet them over the next few weeks to find someone who will adequately represent the greats of North Carolina and, importantly, the United States,” Trump said.
Trump noted that he won the state of North Carolina in three presidential elections. Trump promoted tax cuts and border security in his provisions to support the law.
While the votes were still open, Trump blows up Tillis in a social media post for “making a big mistake.”
Trump accused Tillis of attempting to “great stand to get promotion for himself.”
Facing reelection in 2026, Tillis is serving as a speaker in the state House and is serving in his second term in the Senate. Tillis said there is a lot he likes about the bill, but it would mean North Carolina would lose hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funds.
“The Senate version of one big, beautiful bill has a major change in Medicaid that is devastating for North Carolina, and I can’t support it,” Tillis said in a social media post.
In 2020, Trump won nearly 100,000 votes over Tillis when both were on the ballot. According to the North Carolina Election Commission, Trump won 2,758,775 votes, while Tillis won 2,665,598 votes.
