Met Gala: Anna Win Tour wears a floor-length blue blazer
Anna Wintour arrives at the Met Gala in a silky floral dress and a floor-length blue blazer.
Anna Wintour isn’t just the face behind the page on Vogue Magazine. She is a paragon of her own charm.
The well-known editor-in-chief, who has been at the helm of American Vogue since 1988, has resigned as head of editorial content for the magazine as part of a revised organizational structure adopted by Condé Nast Publishing four years ago. Wintour remains as Condé Nast’s Chief Content Officer and Global Editorial Director for Vogue.
Known for her strict management style and iconic A-frame bob, Wintour helped redefine the celebrity fashion landscape thanks to Vogue’s bold cover portraits (which feature Israeli model Michaela Belsk with a casual look that includes $50 faded jeans). Naomi Campbell and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The StyleMaven also helped transform the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s luxury couture fundraiser, Met Gala, into a viral star-studded luxury that sparks talk of fashionistas, celebrities and social media onlookers.
Let’s take a look back at the fashion world and the indelible marks of Wintour from the rest of the day.
Anna Wintour Mets Gala “Hip” Celebrity Syndig
The 1995 Met Gala was Wintool’s first event, but it didn’t become her lasting “party of the year” until 1999. Wintour “removed the shellac and unlocked the potential for a much more hip joint in the future.”
It’s no secret that Wintour has heavy hands to curate Gala details, as previously catalogued in the 2016 “First Monday in May” documentary. Wintour, along with his museum curator and best friend Tom Ford, will coordinate every detail, including dress code, food, seating arrangements.
In recent years, the Met Gala has been head-turning themes exploring the history of multiculturalism, nature and fashion, with epic fashion moments such as Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Zendaya, Jared Leto and Bad Bunny. Despite all the celebrity wattages, Lisa, a contributor to West Coast Vogue, details Odell some of the complicated complexities that Anna seems to be “a fuss” during the event.
“When Kim Kardashian wore a custom latex Tierry Muggler dress that had been firmly redefined to a camp-themed party in 2019, Anna kept telling Lisa Love, “Would you tell me to sit?”,” Odell wrote. “Love had to explain that, in fact, the Kardashians couldn’t physically sit down.”
Anna Wintour is reportedly inspiring the book and film on “The Devil Ware’s Prada”
Written by former Wintoll assistant Lauren Weissberger, the 2003 novel, “The Devil Ware’s Prada,” tells the story of Andrea Sachs, a magazine author. The book became a New York Times bestseller, producing two sequels: Revengeware Prada: Devil Returns in 2013 and Life gives you Leloomens in 2018.
In an interview with Random House, Weisberger, who didn’t name Wintour as direct inspiration, said he had no intention of writing “a story called “Boss” from Hell.”
At the time of the book’s release, Wintour told the New York Times: “I always enjoy great fiction, and I haven’t decided whether to read it or not.
Weisberger’s insider portrait of Wintour became a big hit in the film adaptation in 2006 starring Anne Hathaway as Sachs and Meryl Streep as Priestly. Oscar-nominated, Dramedy sold $326.7 million worldwide.
Wintour has since appeared to have given Weisberger’s high fashion story a seal of approval. In December 2024, Vogue editors were found attending the London premiere of the musical The Devil Wears Prada, a theatrical rethink of Elton John’s music and film.
Anna Wintour will be a musical muse of Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj
Wintour’s fashion empire served as lyrical feed for some of the biggest names in music.
Magazine big names have been mentioned or dropped in songs such as Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Bad Bunny. Jay-Z plays a pun in 2009’s Empire State of Mind.
Minaj screamed at Wintool with her songs “Munny” and “Come on a Corn,” and fellow rapper Azalea Banks named her 2018 single “Anna Wintool” after her iconic editor.
Rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, referred to Wintoll as a symbol of the industry situation in 2012’s “Cold”: “Dinner with Anna Wintour / Race with Anja Lubik / I told you… It’s more than music.”
More recently, the 2023 track “Vou787” checks out the name of the Reggaeton Superstar Bad Bunny.
Anna Wintour shaping the next generation of fashion with Allyship
Wintour is invested in the future of fashion, just as it shoots the best looks of Vogue’s covers.
Throughout her career, the media executive has loaned out financial and social support to emerging designers, including British designer John Galliano. Wintour secured financial support for Galliano’s fashion label of the same name.
Wintour also loved the works of designers Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs. In 2003, the Council of Fashion Designers at Wintour and America established the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.
“Anna has supported everything through my highs and my lows,” Galliano said with each cut at the 2014 British Fashion Awards. “When I was banished with almost daily phone calls, inspiration, encouragement and truly practical help, she reached out to me.”
