The leader of Jose Adolfo Masias, Ecuador’s most wanted man and Los Ceneros gangster, was captured on Wednesday, according to country’s President Daniel Novoa.
Macias, known as “Fito,” escaped from a prison in Guayaquil in January 2024 and was sentenced to 34 years in prison for murder and drug trafficking.
His escape unleashed a wave of violence in Ecuador, declared a conflict inherent in Novoa, and urged Los Ceneros and 21 other criminal groups to designate 21 other criminal groups acting as terrorist groups.
In February 2024, the US Treasury approved Los Coneros and Macias for drug trafficking and violent activities across Ecuador and the continent.
Novoa said Ecuador is working to hand him over to the US and is waiting for a response from American officials.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
