According to the Brazilian government, a young Brazilian hiker fell hundreds of meters from the towering ridge of an Indonesian volcanic volcano and was trapped there for almost four days. Over the course of several days, millions of people in Brazil looked, posted and prayed as rescuers tried to find her.
Juliana Mullins, 26, began her summer on Mount Rinjani, an active 3,726 metres (12,224 feet) volcano on Lombok, Indonesia, and Mount Rinjani on June 21, when a guide and five foreigners fell to about 600 metres (1,968 feet) (1,968 feet).
“No signs of life were found,” said Mohammad Syafii, head of Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency.
The family of Mullins in Brazil confirmed her death.
Indonesian rescuers said they used thermal drones to find Mullins’ body next to the crater after a four-day intensive search, complicated by extremely harsh terrain and weather.
The difficult situation and limited visibility delayed the evacuation process, Syafii said that rescuers climbed up to transport Mullins’ body to Sembalan Base Camp, but would have to wait until Wednesday for transport to police hospitals.
Brazil’s Foreign Ministry called her death a tragedy, saying the country’s embassy in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, coordinated rescue with local authorities.
Mullins’ ordeal riveted her home country, Brazil, and has seen millions of people since her fall news broke after dramatic search and rescue efforts.
Authorities had not said exactly when she passed away.
In addition to the Brazilian frenzy, the Brazilian embassy in Jakarta, has accused the Indonesian government of manufacturing a rescue for Marinz and misleading her family of giving her food and water in the fall.
There was no immediate response from the Indonesian government to that claim.
Lombok, Indonesia, is located east of Jakarta, with its neighbor being Bali. Mount Rinjani, the country’s second most tense peak, is a popular destination for trekkers.
In an Instagram post, the Mullins family thanked many Brazilians who prayed for their daughter’s safety.
Mullins, a dancer who lives in Niteroy, outside of Rio de Janeiro, has been traveling around Asia since February, her family said. She had visited the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand before her arrival in Indonesia.
