WASHINGTON – Sen. Alex Padilla had strong words to J.D. Vance after the vice president misrepresented the Democrats as “Jose.”

“He knows my name,” Padilla said on MSNBC’s “Weekend” on June 21. Padilla’s comments continued: “It’s an indicator of how troublesome and unsafe this administration is.”

Padilla was the first Latinx elected to the US Senate from California.

Vance, who served with Padilla in the Senate, spoke during a trip to Los Angeles at a press conference aimed at defending the Trump administration’s military response to protests over changes in immigration policy.

“I was hoping Jose Padilla would come here to ask questions, but unfortunately he decided not to show up because there was no theater. That’s all,” Vance said.

On June 12, Padilla was handcuffed and forced to be removed from a press conference held by Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem. Democrats condemned the incident and called for an investigation. The Trump administration defended Noem’s security details action that day, accusing Padilla of engaging in political theatre.
