Tiktok stays when President Donald Trump extends the ban period
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order extending the deadline to ban Tiktok.
President Donald Trump appears to be criticizing the June celebration in a social media post, saying “There are too many non-operating holidays in the US.”
“It costs billions of dollars to close all of these businesses,” Trump said on June 19.
The President did not specifically name the holidays in his post.
June was ordered free of charge after the last black Confederate slaves arrived in Galveston, Texas, to commemorate the events of June 19, 1865.
It has long been celebrated by black Americans, but became prominent in the nation in 2020 amid protests against racial inequality. In 2021, the federal public holidays were officially recognized by then-President Joe Biden.
The costs Trump mentioned in his post were not immediately clear. Private companies are not forced to close on federal holidays, and many are not.
Most national banks, federal offices, and the US Postal Service were closed in honor of June. However, major retailers such as Walmart, Costco, Target and Starbucks were open during their holidays.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt was asked by a reporter earlier in the day whether Trump is expected to commemorate June.
“I’m not tracking his signature today,” she replied. “I know this is a federal holiday.”
Trump previously honored June, including his first term as president. But Trump sparked controversy in 2020 after scheduling his first rally since the Covid-19 lockdown in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
He later changed the date of the event.
