The 2025 Stanley Cup Finals were tight enough to get through the first two games.
Two overtime games for the first time since the 2014 Stanley Cup final. Teams within everyone’s goal except 77 seconds. This is the second lead change in the past 42 seasons.
Defending champions Florida Panthers confirmed there was no repetition as they retreated due to the Edmonton Oilers’ 6-1 defeat in Game 3. Game 4 will be held on Thursday, June 12th at Sunrise, Florida.
Brad Marchand recorded 56 seconds of the game, and the Panthers did not give up the lead. Sam Reinhart scored in the second term, making it 3-1 just 80 seconds after the Oilers scored their first goal of the game.
“In particular, what both teams experienced in the first two games – at that point (after the Oilers’ goal), there’s no lead,” Panthers manager Paul Maurice said. “Sam’s goals were very important to us.”
The Oilers drew goalkeeper Stuart Skinner in the third term after giving up five goals on 23 shots.
The Panthers’ power play, struggling at 3.6% at home, scored three times as the undisciplined Oilers gave them 11 times more opportunities. Sam Bennett scored his second home playoff goal and scored his record 12 goals on the road. He scored two big hits before scoring on a 2-0 breakaway, making it 4-1.
“He can do that, he can be a physical player, he’s incredible speed, he’s finished his hands,” Maurice said.
The referees began handing out cheating in the third season as the game became uncontrollable.
“I don’t think our best has been featured in every series for a long time, but that’s what’s coming,” said Oilers captain Conor McDavid. “We’ve shifted our focus to finding ways to win in Game 4.”

Euler begins the period with a power play.
Penalties and power were accumulated over that period. Florida’s Brad Merchand began scoring with a late penalty. Oilers coach Chris Noblauch told TNT that constant trips to the penalty box were “a disaster recipe.” He was right as Carter Verhaege scored and scored to give the Panthers a second home power play goal for the playoffs. The shot was 12-10 Edmonton, leading 11-5 on hits.
Evan Bouchard crosschecks Anton Randell, who punches the Oilers defender. Scrum breaks out. Lundell will enter the roughening penalty box when the second period begins.

Again, it’s shortened as Aaron Eckblad calls out to trip. There are 4 vs. 4. During the subsequent Edmonton power, Sergei Bobrovsky saves Evan Bouchard with his gloves.
Evander Kane will face another penalty. Edmonton kills it too.

Notably, the Oilers appear to be using Game 2 defense pairing. They switched pairings during practice on June 8th.
Early roster reports list Edmonton’s Jeff Skinner as a scratch. This shows that Ryan Nugent Hopkins is playing. Skinner would have been his successor.
As Director Chris Noblauc said, Ryan Nugent Hopkins is on the ice. He is determined game time.
Panthers’ Sergei Bobrovsky (13-6, 2.21 average, .912 save rate) vs. Stuart Skinner (7-5, 2.61, .901).
The Oilers have four of the top five scorers in the series. Conor McDavid scored a league-high 31 points, followed by Leon Draysitel (29). Evan Bouchard (21) and Ryan Nugent Hopkins (18). Draisaitl has nine team-high goals.
McDavid has five assists in the final, with three goals and 11 assists in the seven-game streak.
The Panthers have 11 players with double-digit points led by Sam Bennett (19) and Brad Merchand, Alexander Barkov, Carter Werhege and Matthew Tokachuk (17 each). Bennett is the main goal scorer in the 13 playoffs.
16 goals across two games have been linked to 2023 in the finals of the past 42 seasons.
However, Panthers manager Paul Maurice said defense and goaltending are strong despite the large number of targets.
“Everything is contested all over the ice,” Maurice said. “So…it’s even more intense. How amazing it is to watch it in the final rather than the first round. These guys are working hard. That’s great.”
The Oilers changed their defense pairing during practice on June 8th. Darnell Nurse per NHL.com was with Evan Bouchard, Mattias Ekholm with John Klingberg, and Jake Walman with Brett Kulak. Game 2 pairings were Bouchard-Ekholm, Nurse-Kulak and Walman-Klingberg.
Director Kris Knoblauch did not do much about the change.
“There are a few changes throughout games 1 and 2, and there are a few more throughout the rest of the series,” Knoblauch said.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins missed practice on June 8th due to a private injury but took part in the optional skating on June 9th. “He’s going to take a warm-up and decide from there,” he said.
If Nugent-Hopkins is not available, Jeff Skinner will return to the lineup. He has goals and assists in two playoff games.
“He was a real expert and he was ready to play when we needed him,” Knoblauch said.
He returns to the Panthers lineup in Game 3, with Jesper Boqvist coming out. Playing in line 4 with Thomas Nose and Jonah Gadjovic, Greer missed Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, limited in Game 5 and missed the first two games of the Stanley Cup final.
