Over 70 people in seven states have become ill due to the outbreak of salmonella It is linked to an egg recalled by a California-based egg distributor, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

On Friday, the egg company recalled 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free, brown certified organic eggs sold under multiple brand names, according to a recall notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

According to the CDC, 21 out of 79 people were hospitalized and no deaths have been reported.

The eggs were sold to restaurants and retailers in Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Indiana, Nebraska, Nevada, Washington and Wyoming, according to the CDC. They were distributed at retailers such as Walmart, Save Mart, Food Max, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raleigh, Food4 Less, and Ralph.

Salmonella “can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and other people with weak immune systems.” FDA. Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain in healthy infected people.

The company also said its internal food safety team will “conduct its own rigorous review” to identify future precautions. “We are committed to fully addressing this issue and implementing all the necessary corrective actions to ensure this never happens again,” the company said.

The CDC recommends anyone who throws the recalled eggs away at home or in the business should return them to the store where they purchased them.
