The National Guard has been deployed several times in Los Angeles in response to civil disability and natural disasters. For the past few years, the state guards have been sent at the request of state and local officials.

In January, California Gov. Gavin Newsom approved a request from Los Angeles County to deploy the National Guard to support law enforcement during a wildfire. Thousands of security guards were sent to the area to assist with firefighting operations and assist local law enforcement agencies with checkpoints and patrols in evacuation areas.

Vice President JD Vance calls the protesters “rebels” and Senior White House aide Stephen Miller described the protest as “a violent rebellion,” but President Donald Trump has not invoked the rebellion law.

Under the law of 1807, the president may have legal authority to send troops or federalize security guards in states that have no control or denial of rebellion under federal law.

In June 2020, USA Today reported that it had considered calling a rebellion law against protests in response to the May 2020 killing of George Floyd, a black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on a street corner.

At the time, Defense Secretary Mark Esper and others urged the deployment of domestic troops to quell civil unrest.

In 1994, the magnitude 6.7 earthquake known as the Northridge earthquake, shook the San Fernando Valley, about 20 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The earthquake caused an estimated $20 billion in housing damage, according to the California Earthquake Service. Security guards were sent as part of the disaster relief work.

The last-minute rebellion law was invoked in 1992 when former President George HW Bush overthrew Rodney King, causing unrest among the Los Angeles public, causing more than 60 people to die and 2,300 injured, according to the Rights Requests Institute. Thousands of members of the security guards, the US Army and the Marines were deployed throughout the city.

In 1965, nearly 14,000 security forces were sent to Los Angeles amid riots in Watts at the request of li at Stanford University’s Institute of Research and Education.
