The Home Appliance Company, whose window air conditioning was chosen as the best unit of the New York Times, reminded them of 1.7 million devices due to the potential for growth of mold that leads to illness.
The New York Times (NYT) listed the Midea U Window Air Condysser as a no-one contender in the list of six best air conditioners newspapers for 2025, with the U+ model running. The unit was recently recalled as pooled water inside the air conditioner does not drain quickly enough, leading to mold growth and potential health issues.
“Mold exposure poses a risk of respiratory problems and other infectious diseases for some consumers,” according to Midea.
According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall was issued on June 5th. According to the announcement, around 1.7 million devices have been recalled in Canada and around 45,900 people have been sold.
Mold reports regarding mold in air conditioners include 17 reports of customers with respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, sneezing or sore throat, Midea said.
Where was the recalled air conditioner sold?
The recalled air conditioners are made in China and Thailand, including Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. It was sold under brand names such as Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze.
The units were sold at Costco, Menards, Home Depot, Best Buy and other stores nationwide, and were sold between March and May 2020 on Midea.com, amazon.com, costco.com, menards.com, homedepot.com, lowes.com, walmart.com, bjs.com, bestbuy.com and other websites.
“This U-shaped mid-air conditioner is the quietest model I’ve ever tested and is designed to allow you to open the window. However, the installation process is not interesting,” the New York Times writes about the U model.
Regarding the runner-up U+ model, NYT said, “Plus is more efficient and has some minor feature upgrades. The redesigned bracket improves the installation process (slightly).”.

How to determine if you have a recalled air conditioner?
The recalled air conditioner was designed to fit in windows and sold in three sizes of cooling power, including 8,000, 10,000 and 12,000 British thermal units (BTUs).
The air conditioner is about 22 inches tall and 14 inches tall, with the number of models on the label on the right side of the unit, Midea said. The unit has a remote control and can also be controlled by a mobile app.

What is Midea doing to fix the issue?
Customers with recalled air conditioners stated that they should contact Midea for free repairs or full or proportionate refunds based on the date of purchase or the date the product was created.
Customers wishing to receive a refund must send the unit back to Midea using a free shipping label or submit a photo showing that they have disconnected the unit’s plugged power cord.
Those who want to repair the unit should contact Midea, depending on the unit model, to install a new drain plug and a repair kit containing a new drain plug and bubble level, or send it to the customer.
