Saudi Arabia plans to send Arabian leopards to us

President Donald Trump visited Saudi Arabia last month to sign trade and economic transactions that benefit Americans, but it’s truly special to be deeply hidden in the list of collaborations between the two countries: Leopard.

In a move reminiscent of China’s diplomatic gestures in 1972, when the government allowed a pair of pandas to visit the National Zoo, Saudi Arabia sends two Arabian leopards to DC as part of its conservation programme.

The White House issued a fact sheet highlighting its presidential visit to Saudi Arabia in its line on “creating a dedicated exhibit in Washington” for the “endangered Arabian Leopard Party,” as the New York Times first reported.

“The Smithsonian National Zoo and the Institute for Conservation Biology” said Brandi Smith, director of the Smithsonian National Zoo and the Institute for Conservation Biology. “To save the world’s most vulnerable species, it takes global cooperation, scientific rigor and innovation. That’s what we do best.”

According to the Smithsonian, there are estimated fewer than 120 Arabic leopards who are estimated to live in “small isolated groups” of Oman and Yemeni Middle Eastern countries.

“Very interesting” Trump

Smith, who was at Riyadh’s royal palace when Trump arrived, told NYT that the US president and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had expressed great interest when he was told about the proposed leopard transport to the United States.

“As soon as I said leopard, I saw both of them, their attention came out,” Smith explained in her office at the National Zoo.

She further said Trump was intrigued by the size and danger of the leopard.

“Like: ‘How big are they? What do they eat? How dangerous are they?” Something like that,” she said.
