Michelle Obama has broken his silence over the decision to drop the eldest son, Maria Obama, the last name.
Maria Anne, who pursues a film career in Hollywood, used her middle name as her artistic name for the short film “The Heart,” which premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
Appearing on the Brother Revley podcast, co-resident of Oliver and Kate Hudson on Wednesday, June 4th, Obama worked on Maria’s decision to abandon Obama after former President Barack Obama’s second term.
Obama also shares University of Southern California alumni Sasha Obama.
“Our daughters (Maria and Sasha) are 25 and 23 years old. They are young adult women, but they definitely spent their teenage years when it was pushing. … They’re still doing it,” Obama told Hudson’s brother.
Hudson is the child of actress Goldie Horn and a formerly estranged dad and musician Bill Hudson, who counts Horn’s long-term partner, Kurt Russell, as his father figure.
“It’s very important for my kids to feel they’ve acquired what they’re getting in the world. They don’t want them to think that they don’t work hard, that they naturally just handed things over,” the author added. “They are very sensitive to that. They want to be their people.”

Maria’s first project, “She took off her last name. We’ll still know it’s you, Maria,” continued Obama. “But we respected the fact that she was trying to make her path.”
Obama appeared alongside her brother Hudson and her own, along with Craig Robinson, co-host of the “IMO” podcast, saying, “Our daughters don’t want to be little princesses in the White House.”
“They wanted to push the envelope. They needed some ropes. They wanted to try some things, they wanted to go out into the world, and I knew under circumstances, if I were my mother I needed more ropes than I would have given them,” Obama said.
