From durable veterans to fiery trendsetters, there are musical documentaries for that.
The Tribeca Film Festival, held in New York, unveiled dozens of new titles during the city’s acquisitions from June 4-15, and will highlight Warhols, including Billy Joel, Billy Idol, Culture Club and contemporary hit makers such as Miley Cyrus and Becky G.
After Tribeca, most will move into larger viewing universes. So, if you can watch Slicklick’s visual albums, learn about Eddy Vedder’s work and make a world premiere, you can help find a cure for epidermal bulls for rare genetic disorders.

As the opening selection for this year’s festival, the film that recorded Billy Joel’s extraordinary career was already deeply anticipated. “Boy George & Culture Club”
Director Alison Elwood directed documentaries on the GoGo, Eagles, Cyndi Lauper and Laurel Canyon scenes. She knows drama. And what band is best to embody the combination of more romantic history than a culture club with meshed theatre, fashion and brilliant new wave pop? Please wear a hat.

“Depeche Mode: M”
In 2023, British electrolockers played three sold-out Mexico City shows, with Mexican director Fernando Fries seeking a throughline from his country’s “cultural obsession with death” to music in Depeche mode. Expect to hear about Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) and the band’s performance on the “Memento Mori” album, written during the pandemic and released the year after co-founder Andy Fletcher’s 2022 death.

“Counting Crows: Have you seen me recently?”
It has been catapulted into one of the most ubiquitous acts of the 1990s with its seven million debut albums (“August and Everything After”) and hits (“Mr. Jones”, “Round Here” and “A Long December”) from an indie band based in San Francisco. The film highlights its attempt to delve into the band’s archives and balance artistic integrity with suffocating fame.

Miley Cyrus, “Something beautiful”
Miley Cyrus’ new studio album, also known as “Ponthy Beautiful,” is a concept album. Yes, it’s also a palette of bangers and ballads. The 13 songs are packed with vivid lyrics that should serve as the ideal foundation for this visual album, further fueling Cyrus’s latest Cauldron of Creativity.

‘Wizkid: Long Live Lagos’
The Afrobeat singer not only is known worldwide, but did so by staying true to its Nigerian roots. Through his music, Wizkid is also trying to change his perception of how Africa is seen and heard on display at his live shows.

“Billy Idol should be dead.”
Luckily, the sneer and hair that I had tried to do is remain a heartbeat. “I’m lucky to be here,” the idol told USA Today this spring, emphasizing that the documentary’s title has not been exaggerated. “If I had done what I was doing in the 80s today, I would be dead.” The film details his battle with idol addiction, as well as his victory revival and his current tour with new album (“Dream Into It”) and Joan Jett.

No doubt Metallica fans are well-established loyalists. For over 40 years, Hard Rocker has spoken to the tribes through Rapid Fire’s double bass drum patterns and fiery guitar riffs. The documentary explains the unbreakable connection between the band and the fans and how Metallica’s music is a lifeboat for millions.

Eddie Vedder, “A matter of time”
The powerful epidermal concert is the background to this film, detailing the years of Eddie and Jill Vedder quests and helping to cure rare genetic diseases that cause fragile, ferocious skin. “It’s a testament to the incredible magnetic properties these young people and their families have. It has kept us working non-stop for 10 years,” Eddie Vedder tells USA Today exclusively. “Now there’s a ton of hope that’s never existed before,” Jill, the wife of Vedder, the film’s philanthropist and executive producer, tells USA Today that the EB community has “tell us a lot about courage, hope and resilience.

Becky G, ‘Rebbeca’
There was a long way from Rebbeca Marie Gomez to Latin Singing Sensation and actress Becky G. The film follows her at a pivotal moment in her career, and is the release of her 2023 Mexican regional album, “Esquinas,” which takes life with love, loss and addiction, both past and present.

“Already free tc”
California rapper and producer Ty Dolla $IGN thrived in a decade-plus career filled with hits and features (“Pain for the Sucker”, “Carnival”). His brother, Gabriel, serves a 67-year sentence for murder. The film follows the brothers over two years to explore how their paths diverge and have recently converged.

Slickrick, “Victory”
The British-American MC, known for his partnership with Doug E. Fresh & The Get Fresh Crew (“La da da di”, no one?), has created a 25-minute visual album called “Victory,” which complements his June 13th album.
