Disney has laid out hundreds of employees from teams in the TV and film division, the company confirmed to USA Today.

According to a Disney spokesperson, “hundreds” of unemployment occurs primarily across Disney’s entertainment division, which handles the marketing of film and television, promotion, casting and development, despite the fact that the entire team has not been eliminated.

The spokesman attributed the cuts to a “rapid pace” of industry transformation and “operating more efficiently” to Disney’s goals. The position was officially eliminated on Monday, June 2nd.

Consumers have switched to streaming services such as Disney+ over traditional TV and film distributors, bringing financial stressors to companies such as Disney and its competitors.

Disney is engaged in ongoing cost-cutting measures after resigning in 2020, resigning in 2022, and CEO Bob Iger retired in 2022. In a 2023 revenue call, Iger announced plans to fire 7,000 employees to cut billions of dollars in spending.

Several job cuts followed. In September 2024, Disney fired approximately 300 employees across its corporate operations, including law, HR, finance and communications. Previous and subsequent cuts have influenced properties such as National Geographic, Pixar and TV Channel Freeform.

More recently, Disney cut nearly 6% of its staff (about 200 employees) in March with its ABC News and Disney Entertainment Networks units.

As of the latest fiscal year report in September, Disney had around 233,000 employees. The second quarter of 2025 revenue report reflects total revenue of $23.6 billion, up 7% from last year. It also reported a 126 million increase in Disney+ subscribers since the first quarter of 2025, reflecting a change in consumer preferences for streaming.

The layoffs were first reported by the deadline on June 2nd.
