Trump calls Elon Musk “a great guy” amidst drug use allegations
President Trump said he was unaware of Elon Musk’s alleged drug use and supported the billionaire’s cost cuts.
Over 80% of Americans said democracy is being tested at least, but neither party has seen it as capable of getting things done in a CNN poll released on June 1.
Polls show that 49% of respondents believe that American democracy is under attack, while 36% believe that American democracy is being tested.
Respondents held the dim view of both parties, even though 58% said the government should do more to resolve the issue. This is a record high in over 30 years of network voting.
The network reported that respondents were split if either party represented the middle class.
Republicans saw the seven-point advantage in dealing with the economy as they were the narrowest lead in the polls since 2022, losing half of their advantages in immigration and falling from a 14-point lead in November 2023 to a 6-point lead in new polls.
The poll was conducted on SSRS or telephone from May 5-26 of 2,539 adults nationwide using a combination of online and telephone interviews.

Neither party is considered to have strong leadership and is unable to get things done.
When asked if the party had a strong leader, 40% of respondents agreed with that explanation from Republicans, and only 36% said they could get things done. The investigation was even more pessimistic for Democrats. Only 16% of respondents said they had strong leaders, while 19% said they could get things done.
Despite 81% of respondents saying they saw “significant differences” between the two parties, neither response received both questions in 43% and 44%, respectively.
The network reported that the positive gap could be 50 points more likely than the respondents handed out to Democrats, with the partisan views with Republican respondents, and said their party has a strong leader in the issue of being able to draw a 36-point difference between the partisans.
Independents are particularly pessimistic about the parties, with 76% saying neither party has strong leadership or has been unable to get things done.
Diversity considered positive by the majority
Less than three-quarters of respondents said that increasing racial diversity would be “to enrich American culture rather than threaten.”
The dissent to that view held by 27% of respondents is concentrated in 45% of Republicans and Republicans and 45% of Republican-leaning independents calling diversity a threat — the network said, with a 25% jump from 2019.
Democrats had an eight-point advantage over LGTBQ issues in the poll and held a seven-point margin on race issues.
Respondents say abortion should be legal in all circumstances, and polls hit a record high of 36%. Thirty-five percent of respondents said abortion should be legal in “some” situations, while 15% said the procedure should be legal in most situations.
