Flying is the safest way to travel, according to global safety experts
Experts say flying is the safest way to travel.
As the summer travel season increases, the State Department has warned Americans to “be careful” when visiting several popular European destinations, including Italy.
The travel advisory dated May 23 stated that “there is a risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activities in Italy.”
Italy is considered a level two country on the State Department’s advisory scale, ranging from level 1 to “normal precautions”, level 4 to “not travel.” According to a State Department spokesman, it will be at that level since April 2022.
Other Level 2 European countries with potential terrorist risks include, but are not limited to, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK.
Travelers can find the latest safety recommendations in all countries on the State Department website.
What are your travel safety tips?
The State Department recommends travelers for Italy and other destinations where special precautions are recommended.
- Check traveler checklists and prepare emergency emergency plans
- Sign up for the Smart Traveler Registration Program to receive embassy alerts and be more accessible in emergencies
- Beware of tourist attractions
- Beware of local news reports and pivot plans if necessary
At level 2 destinations, travelers are encouraged to “be aware of increased risks to safety and security,” but do not discourage them from visiting and does not mean that these places are unsafe.
A State Department spokesman said that USA Today regularly reviews national safety and other conditions, and the level of consultation is based on established risk indicators such as crime, civil unrest, natural disasters, health and illegal detention, allowing travelers to make informed decisions.
It is also worth noting that the State Department only provides guidance on foreign travel, and in some countries it warns citizens about visiting the US.
