WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump used the president’s seal for a multi-million dollar dinner with crypto investors, despite the White House saying it was an event rather than a private one, not an official event, according to a social media post from the Chinese billionaire who attended the event.
“As a top holder for $Trump, I’m excited to connect with everyone, speak code and discuss the future of the industry,” Justin Sun, who is worth $8.5 billion, said ahead of dinner on May 22nd. His post after dinner showed Trump making a brief statement next to the podium with the president’s seal.
Trump’s official @gettrumpmemes site promoted the dinner on May 5, saying, “The US President is having dinner with Trump coin holders.”
According to Inca Digital of Crypto Intelligence Firm, Ethics Watchdogs hosted a dinner that included former NBA star Lamar Odom, blowing up Trump as investors spent an estimated $148 million on $Trump Meme Coin. Around 100 protesters across the street from Trump National Golf Course in Sterling, Virginia, held signs containing messages such as “Stop Crypto Corruption” and “Release Guest List.”
“This is one of the most blatant and terrifying examples of selling access to the presidency I’ve ever seen,” said Donald Sherman, executive director and chief counsel for Washington’s responsibility and ethics.
The Securities and Exchange Commission sued Sun and his companies — the Tron Foundation, the Vitrento Foundation, and Rainberry — in March 2023.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that dinner was a private event, not a public event.
“The president is present in his personal time,” Levitt said. “It’s not a White House dinner.”
She dismissed a question about the ethics of holding dinners for those who invested in his crypto coin.
“The President follows all Interest Contradiction Act that applies to the President,” Levitt said. “The American people believe this is ridiculous for anyone hinting that this president is profiting from the presidency.”
