The sixth generation Toyota RAV4 was revealed on May 20th. The new RAV4 generation features major redesigns and exciting new performance-oriented GR trims.
The RAV4’s small SUV is stronger than ever, thanks to its powertrain options. The new Gazoo Racing model incorporates design elements from Toyota’s world-renowned motorsport engineering department.
2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport is the most powerful RAV4 ever
Like some Toyota models, the next-generation RAV4 is completely separate from the powertrain of internal combustion engines. Currently, all new RAV4 models come with a hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrain setup. The 2026 TOYOTA RAV4 GR Sport uses an internal combustion engine and an electric motor to drive power to the wheels. It “takes inspiration from motorsports for models, which are expressions of driving fun,” Toyota says.
The 2026 RAV4 GR Sport produces a whopping 320 horsepower. Other GR models tend to be equipped with turbocharged gas engines, making them the only GR model that is also a PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle). The RAV4 GR Sport features an electronically controlled, continuous variable transmission. All-wheel drive comes standard for better traction and capabilities. The SUV also features Toyota Gazoo Racing tuning handling.
Toyota’s upcoming performance-oriented RAV4 model is the most powerful RAV4 ever. The 2025 TOYOTA RAV4 plug-in hybrid produces 302 horsepower, 18 pony, which will shy away from the total power of the 2026 GR Sport. According to Toyota, it is between 0 and 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds.
Toyota’s new performance trim has a 50-mile electric drive range
Thanks to the electric motor and battery, the 2026 TOYOTA RAV4 GR Sport can be moved with just power. It only has a 50-mile estimated electricity range. That battery can be charged (and refilled range) via an electric vehicle charger similar to an EV.
Electric-only operating range makes plug-in hybrids like the RAV4 GR Sport more efficient. The new performance SUV may have several different driving modes, including EV-only modes and sport modes. The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid has a similar powertrain setup that provides the driver with four different primary driving modes, allowing the driver to use the hybrid and power in a variety of ways.
2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport Features
As for the 2026 RAV4 GR Sport, the range of only enough power and electricity is just one corner of the spear. It also features plenty of sports car touches for drivers interested in exterior/interior styling and design.
Features include:
- Aggressive exterior styling
- GR Functional Matrix Grill
- 20 inch wheel summer tires
- Front/Rear Wing Type Spoilers
- Red interior stitching, GR logo on front headrest, steering wheel
According to a press release, Toyota has included paddle shifters and aluminum pedals to “give it a sporty appeal.” Between high power, tuned suspension and sophisticated interiors, the GR Sport is just as sporty as the RAV4 gets.
The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is expected to hit dealers later this year.
