New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani meets with President Trump at the White House
President Donald Trump has confirmed via Truth Social that he will meet with New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani to discuss affordability and public safety.
New York City’s next mayor, Zoran Mamdani, will be sworn in on New Year’s Day not inside City Hall, but dozens of feet below.
According to a Dec. 29 news release, the next Democratic mayor will be sworn in in a private late-night ceremony at the Old City Hall subway station. New York State Attorney General Letitia James will administer the oath of office, and Mamdani’s family will also be in attendance at the underground ceremony.
The metro station is a historical landmark in the city and represents a wide range of public transportation. It was the starting point for New York City’s first subway line in 1904. Although it was decommissioned in 1945, the station is maintained and available for tours through the New York Transit Museum.
Mamdani said in a statement that the station is a “physical monument” to New York City and that the subway system is the city’s lifeblood.
“As I take the oath from the train station at the start of the new year, I am humbled by the opportunity to lead millions of New Yorkers into a new era of opportunity and honored to carry on our city’s great legacy,” Mamdani said in a news release.
Later on January 1, the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist will hold a large public swearing-in ceremony on the City Hall steps above ground, where Sen. Bernie Sanders is scheduled to swear in Mamdani in front of about 4,000 guests.
The opening ceremony will also include a public viewing event, Block Party on Broadway, at Canyon of Heroes along Broadway.
