Zoran Mamdani will be sworn in as New York City’s mayor shortly after the ball drops in Times Square, and his supporters will celebrate on January 1st.

“I’m very heartened by the response from New Yorkers who understand that this is not my success, this is our success. This is not my administration, this is our administration. Similarly, this is not my inauguration, this is for all of us,” Mamdani told reporters, as reported by CBS New York.

Approximately 4,000 ticketed guests will witness a public swearing-in at New York City Hall following the official ceremony shortly after midnight. This ceremony has been called the “opening of a new era.”

On either side of the ceremony, a public viewing event, “Block Party on Broadway,” will be held at Canyon of Heroes along Broadway.

Here’s what you need to know about Mamdani’s inauguration.

When will Zoran Mamdani be sworn in?

Mamdani is scheduled to be formally sworn in shortly after midnight on January 1st. The public swearing-in will take place at a ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. ET.

Who would swear Mamdani?

The midnight oath will be administered by New York State Attorney General Letitia James.

James, a Democrat, has become a key figure representing the party’s opposition to the Trump administration. She sued Trump in a civil fraud case in 2023 and fought a now-dismissed Justice Department complaint this year.

The public oath will be administered by Senator Bernie Sanders.

Sanders, a Brooklyn native, like Mamdani, identifies as a democratic socialist. He is one of the country’s most prominent progressive legislators and supported Mamdani’s mayoral candidacy and campaigned for him ahead of his Nov. 4 victory.

A Dec. 22 news release from Mamdani’s transition team described James and Sanders as “political inspirations” for the next mayor.

Is Mamdani’s “Block Party” open to the public?

“Broadway Block Party” is open to the public.

Those wishing to attend must register their participation on the Mamdani Transition website. Block party gates open at 11 a.m. ET.
