“zip coding” is a new trend in dating. Is it ruining your love life?

There are two debates about brewing rezoning. One concerns politics. Another may include your love life.

In the world of dating, people are “zip coding.” This is a practice that involves dating only people within a specific postal code. Zip coding can take a variety of forms depending on who you ask. In the most common version, people set such a harsh radius in their dating app filters to prevent them from meeting people outside their zip code.

For some, zip coding is even further. They date someone exclusively while the person is in their area, but when the person is outside their zip code they consider themselves single. Think about monogamous university students during the school year. Or, they only have boyfriends while they are together at summer camp.

It all speaks of Amy Chan, a dating coach and author of “Breakup Bootcamp: The Science of Your Heart,” taking over the date and obsessed with a place where she’s not healthy.

“We expect everything to be coordinated, fast and frictionless, as if love should function like food,” she says. “But that approach can be narcissistic and focuses on what’s appealing to our ego, rather than what’s easiest for us or anything that promotes real connections.”

Truth about “zip coding” and location

“Location, Location, Location” can serve as a guide to your real estate. But should that be the bedrock of a date too?

Of course, there are perks to date someone nearby. But if the location is prioritized above all else – or, as in the case of “zip coder”, it becomes the only criterion to decide to commit to someone – it starts to become a problem.

“When you date first about convenience and second about connections, you’re exclude people for reasons that aren’t really important,” says Chan. “It’s not about being open to love, it’s more about being dominated by the ego.”

This applies to people who are temporarily committed to those nearby. This is the version of zip coding that Chang says reflects today’s ultra-casual approach to dating. “It’s a connection that’s less convenient than commitment, an investment,” she says.

Needless to say, zip coding can lead to serious heartbreak. “It was tough to get through his phone after agreeing to do Zipcode Dating BC at another university,” wrote one Tiktoker.

Fitness instructor Cody Rigsby has put together a version of trends that you temporarily commit to someone while you’re near Tiktok. “

Logan Ury, director of relationship science in dating app hinge and author of the book How To Not Die Alone, previously warned against the dangers of “relationship shopping.” In Chan’s view, “Zip Coding” is just another version of it, no matter what form it takes.

Are you guilty of “zip coding”?

To recover a ZIP coder, it is important to clarify what a contract breaker is actually and what mere preferences are.

Male dating coach Blaine Anderson previously told USA Today that he could understand this by writing three simple lists for himself. Ask yourself, is the place really so important to you? If so, why?

“I just want to focus on key traits that are important in a few years from now, assuming you’re looking for a long-term partner,” Anderson said.

When you start letting go of your difficult rules and look beyond your vision, you may be surprised at the people you meet. Chang recalls how it completely changed her love life when one of her clients stopped being obsessed with zip code.

“My clients had strict ‘downtown only’ rules,” says Chan. “Then she matched a guy who lived in the suburbs. I encouraged her to go to the date. She shared that it was easy to talk to him.
