Law enforcement captured the assassin who fatally shot conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah, and President Donald Trump announced on September 12, ending a few days of manhunt following the latest acts of nationally shaking political violence.
“I think we’re in custody with a high degree of certainty,” Trump appeared in “Fox and Friends,” adding that he helped the minister and the suspect’s father capture the suspected gunman.
Law enforcement officers have not publicly confirmed detention. Authorities had scheduled a press conference at 9am.
The announcement is a video showing the shooter’s leap from the rooftop after the September 10th attack, the day after law enforcement released some images. The FBI recovered what they believe to be a murder weapon, a powerful bolt-action rifle, and several traces on the roof caused the gunman to fire one deadly shot.
Kirk, 31, was killed while speaking at Utah Valley University. This is the first stop on a fall tour where Kirk discusses various topics such as college students, and is often controversial. Kirk’s university events and the “Proof Me Wrong” argument promoted his reputation as a talented orator and provocateur. He was a close ally of President Donald Trump, and he played a key role in Trump’s growing popularity among young, conservative voters.
Shortly after the shooting, authorities detained the two, but both were released immediately after authorities determined they were not suspected of assassination.
Charlie Kirk Shooting Timeline
The suspected shooter arrived near Utah Valley University and moved to campus around 11:52am on Wednesday, September 10th, according to Utah Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason.
Kirk, who first appeared on his fall tour, was welcomed with applause when he threw his red hat at a crowd of over 3,000 people. Kirk began talking about 12pm.
About 20 minutes later, the Assassin fired one shot, slammed a kirk into the neck, causing panic as people jumped onto the ground and students barricaded themselves in the classroom. Campus officials activated the lockdown and quickly closed the university. Kirk was rushed to the Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Law enforcement says after the shooting, the gunmen leapt from the rooftop, fled to surrounding neighborhoods, leaving their rifles behind in wooded areas.
