Rama Dowaj, the artist and wife of New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, has decided not to campaign with her husband or speak publicly.
In a photo posted on Instagram, Rama Dhwaj is making a heart with both hands.
Her husband, New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, smiles and touches her right arm. The two are hugging each other. Another woman has a gentle smile on her face. And in an intimate photo taken by Cinna Nasseri on election day, Dowaj gestures to herself, a symbolic nod to her approach as a political spouse.
Ms Dhwaj, 28, an artist and illustrator, had been resisting the constraints of a marriage of convenience in the months leading up to Mr Mamdani’s victory on November 4 and its aftermath.
Ms. Duwaj, the youngest first lady in New York history, did not participate in any interviews or campaign alongside Ms. Mamdani as she traveled through the five boroughs of the nation’s largest city.
Mamdani and Duwaj, both democratic socialists, represent changes in American politics. But Dowaj is a visible part of a growing trend among women married to politicians to speak when and where they want.
First lady Melania Trump rarely attends press conferences, keeping her schedule light during her husband’s second term and focusing on mothering Barron Trump, a college student. Gov. Gavin Newsom, a potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, is married to director Jennifer Siebel Newsom, but due to gender stereotypes, Newsom has reconsidered his role as a “first partner” (rather than a woman).
And former first lady Michelle Obama opened up about the dangers of living in the White House this week while promoting her fashion book Look.
Mamdani’s camp, a Texas native, told the New York Times in June that Duwaj earned a master’s degree in illustration from New York’s School of Visual Arts.
Zoran Mandani, Rama Current on Hinge
The two met on the dating app Hinge, a rival to Tinder and Bumble. “I met my wife on Hinge, so there’s still hope for dating apps,” Mamdani said on “The Bulwark Podcast” in June. Duwaji is a talent in her own right, and her work has been featured in The New Yorker and The Washington Post, among others Apple and Spotify, according to her website.
After speculation arose online that he was protecting or hiding his wife, Mamdani, the once shrewd politician, hit back in a social media post on May 12. In photos from the wedding, the happy couple was seen laughing on the sidewalk under an umbrella, Mr. Dhwaj was holding a bouquet of flowers on the subway, and in other photos, the couple looked smitten.
“If you look at Twitter today, or any time for that matter, you’ll see how vicious politics can be. Whether it’s a death threat or a request for deportation, I always ignore it,” he wrote. “But when it comes to the people I love, it’s a different story.” Mamdani then explained that three months earlier, in the city clerk’s office, she had married the “love of my life,” Duwaj. “Right-wing trolls are now trying to make this race, which should be about you, about her,” he continued. “Rama is not only my wife, but also a great artist who deserves to be known on her own terms,” Duwaj said. “You can criticize my opinion, but you can’t criticize my family.”
On election day, Mamdani and Duwaj headed to a polling place in Astoria, Queens, to vote. they held hands. She remained silent during media interviews.
On election night, she took to the stage at her husband’s victory party in a chic all-black outfit after he won the election to replace embattled Mayor Eric Adams. She wore a chic black top and matching velvet skirt with lace. But Duwaj did not speak publicly.
Instead, on Nov. 6, she posted a hand-drawn black-and-white skyline illustration on Instagram with the words, “I LOVE U NYC.” “So proud to be a part of this city,” she captioned the post.
A woman with strong opinions. Maybe Mamdani is right. Because Dowaj is writing about his own life, he doesn’t need someone else’s microphone to make his voice or himself known.
