Announcement of Livelihood Cost Adjustment (COLA)
COLA is determined by measuring inflation. There are a variety of indices, but the most common is the consumer price index. Usually announced in October, Labor Statistics Bureau releases inflation report for September, If the closure continues, this will become impossible, delaying the report and COLA release.
Experts predict that COLA will be around 2.7% in 2026. The current government closures will not affect this increase as government data has already been collected for September.
The COLA announcement has only been delayed once. This delay arrived in 2013 14 days late. However, as expected, the increase began at the beginning of the new year, the amount of benefits received by Social Security recipients was not affected.
Make the most of difficult situations
SSA is planning precisely on situations like government closures, but the reality that employees will suddenly be operating with 10% cuts will have an impact on services.
To fill this gap, SSA suggests creating a free service. my If you don’t have a Social Security account yet. Most of the services available at local offices are typically handled online through a personal account.
