J.C. Penney plans to close another store, this time in California’s San Francisco Bay Area.

The clothing retailer plans to close its store in Stoneridge Shopping Center in Pleasanton, California, on its last day of business on February 22, 2026. The closing was first reported by local news station KRON-TV.

In a statement to the store, J.C. Penney said the company was “unable to continue with the current lease terms of this store and was unable to find another suitable location in the market.”

It’s unclear whether employees affected by the closure will be reassigned to other J.C. Penney stores in the Bay Area.

“We are grateful to our dedicated employees and loyal customers who have shopped at our Pleasanton, California, store over the years,” J.C. Penney said in a statement.

tough year

The California closure comes amid a year of other store and warehouse closures across the United States.

The company closed eight other stores nationwide in May. J.C. Penney previously told USA TODAY that these closures were due to “lease expirations, market changes and other factors.”

Separately, J.C. Penney also closed its Alliance Supply Chain facility in Haslett, Texas, in November.

The department store chain, currently headquartered in Plano, Texas, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2020. At its peak, the company had more than 1,900 stores in the United States. That number is now less than 650.

JC Penney did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.
