Shannon McDade’s boyfriend suddenly got hot. At least that’s what you think if you scroll to her tiktok.
The 27-year-old from New Jersey joined the latest trends supported by Sabrina Carpenter’s new song, “When Did You Get Heat?” If a user on a social media platform posts a style video before and after his boyfriend or husband. Her video has more than 110,000 views, but similar videos have won millions and millions.
McDade’s Beau was a D1 athlete in Pennsylvania, lifting heavy weights and making shot puts in high school. However, once college was finished, he formed new hobbies such as surfing and hydrogenation, becoming slimmer. He “was a big thrower guy and then this thin, tan surfer guy,” says McDade. “It’s just an interesting transformation, we’re kidding about it.
But is this trend harmful to enjoying objectification? Yes, no, Kimberly says that Vered Counseling Shashoua, a therapist for teens and young adults, often navigates the first relationship. “In my opinion, the ‘husband’s brilliance’ tendency is not about body image, but about the joy of boasting about a traditional, attractive partner with a nostalgic twist. ”

McDade asked her boyfriend for permission before posting the video. He’s not a fan of social media – the research is related to mental and physical health issues – and, “Now that’s been posted, he says, ‘This is so weird, just like people are looking at me and saving this and commenting on this,” says McDade. The pair have been dating for 10 years and met at age 17 while working as a lifeguard on the beach. She had no pleasant intentions of sewing the videos together.
As Vered Shashoua points out, “Tiktok trends aren’t a place of nuance and complexity. People use trending audio and formats because it’s easy to get views even if the content doesn’t match perfectly.”
When Shashoua is Vered, this trend reflects the current atmosphere of uncertainty. “When things feel unpredictable, people become more and more nostalgic and traditions,” she says. “What’s more nostalgic than a feminine touch fixing everything?”
“I liked him then and I like him now.”
But it’s not all innocent. “There’s a dark side to every trend that focuses on exteriors,” says Vered Shashoua. “When men watch these videos, they may ask themselves, ‘Do I look like the previous photo? Will my partner feel embarrassed posting me?” ”
If you are in such a situation, be aware of this advice: your appearance is just one aspect of your identity. “Find people who make you feel like you are, the activities that invigorate you, and topics that inspire your curiosity,” adds Vered Shashoua. “Life is a 3D experience that can’t be fully captured.”
But for the sake of the record, McDade was just as happy with her boyfriend, The Shot Patter, as she was with the surfer.
