More than 91 million Americans are facing cold weather warnings as arctic air hits much of the country on December 13th.

Cold weather warnings were issued for parts of at least 21 states, from Montana to northern Florida.

Meanwhile, 54 million people in several states in the Midwest and Northeast are under winter weather warnings.

The upper Midwest and Michigan are expected to see record low temperatures this weekend, with highs below freezing or in the single digits, the National Weather Service said. High temperatures in the teens are expected to be 20 to 30 degrees below average in the Midwest on Dec. 14.

The bitter cold will extend deep into the south. Wind chills are expected to reach 15 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, Florida.

How cold will it get?

The coldest temperatures on Dec. 13 will be in the upper Midwest, northern Plains and Great Lakes regions, with highs ranging from -4 degrees Celsius in parts of Minnesota to mid-to-upper teens in colder-air-region suburbs. The National Weather Service predicted temperatures in the region could drop to -20 degrees overnight. High temperatures will be in the 20s to 30s in the Northeast.

On Dec. 14, Illinois and Wisconsin will see highs in the low single digits, while surrounding states will see highs in the low teens. The cold air will spread eastward, reaching Pennsylvania, New York and New England with high temperatures in the teens to low 20s.

Snow is expected to fall from the Northern Plains to the Ohio Valley on Dec. 13, and into the morning of Dec. 14 in the central Appalachians, mid-Atlantic and Northeast, the weather service said.

“Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect from the Northern Plains to the Mid-Atlantic Coast,” the National Weather Service said in a statement.
