A look back at Dick Cheney’s controversial political achievements
USA TODAY’s Washington bureau chief Susan Page looks back on the political accomplishments of Dick Cheney, who has died at the age of 84.
The funeral for former US Vice President Dick Cheney is scheduled to be held this week in Washington, DC.
Cheney died on November 3 at the age of 84 due to complications from pneumonia and cardiovascular disease, his family announced.
A longtime force in Republican politics, he served under former President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009 and was considered one of the most powerful and controversial people to hold the vice presidential role, largely due to his role in leading the push to invade Iraq in 2003.
After the Jan. 6, 2021, riot, he became critical of President Donald Trump and said he would vote for former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, USA TODAY previously reported.
The former vice president was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1941 and grew up in Wyoming, where he served in the House of Representatives before retiring. He is survived by his wife, Lynn, and two daughters, Mary and Liz. Liz Cheney is a former Republican Congresswoman.
