With Halloween just over a month, retailers and customers are raising sweets, including candy corn, larger-than-life chocolate bars and sticky sour trash.
Analyzing candy-containing grocery orders in 2024, Instacart discovered Halloween candy preferences in each state. At the top of the list was Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, which won the title as America’s favorite Halloween candy. Peanuts M&M and Kitcat were close follow-ups, and Sourpatch Kids, Milky Way and Haribo Gold Bears also made the list.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup won a national title, but each state also has its own candy quirk. Candy corn appeared to have more control over the Midwest and Southern parts of the country, but the children of the Sourpatch were the most popular in the Northeast. Take a look at the top unique candies in each state, according to Instacart’s Sweet Teeth Research.

According to an Instacart Sweet Tooth study, Utah claimed the most candy crown he purchased in October 2024. Utah Instacart shoppers purchased 50.7% of candy more frequently than the national average. Candy sales were also high in Wyoming, Oregon, Idaho and Nebraska.
On the other end of the stick, the ends of Hawaii, Florida and California had the lowest candy sales through Instacart in October 2024.
How do different states feel about candy corn?
The classic Halloween symbols are also excellent at dividing the masses.
According to an Instacart survey, Mississippi shoppers were unable to get enough candy corn last year, allowing them to buy a whopping 92% more sweet treats than the national average. Nebraska wasn’t that late at 91%.
Conversely, Hawaiian shoppers ordered a volume of candy corn 55% less than the national average, according to an Instacart survey.
